The Idaho season
Idaho is one of the few states where four species breed side by side: Black-chinned in the valleys, Calliope in mountain meadows, Rufous in the northern forests, and Broad-tailed in the southeast. The Calliope — North America's smallest bird — was first described from specimens collected near the Idaho/Montana border.
The two-week head start matters more than it looks: the first migrants arrive before most nectar flowers open, and a reliable feeder can anchor a male's breeding territory in your yard for the whole summer.
